It has become a symbol. Mahsa Amini, 22, died in a Tehran hospital on Saturday after being arrested and beaten by police in the Iranian capital.
The reason for this treatment? A violation of the current dress code in the Islamic Republic, in this case the obligation to wear a veil that covers the hair. In Iran, the use of the veil in public is compulsory for women from the age of 7 since the Islamic revolution of 1979.
Protest on social media
Even before the announcement of Mahsa Amini’s death, a strong protest movement had won over Iranian society.
Since then, videos of Iranian women cutting their hair or burning their veils have multiplied rapidly on social media, collected here by Iranian-American activist and journalist Masih Alinejad:
“From the age of 7, if we don’t cover our hair, we won’t be able to go to school or get a job. We are tired of this gender apartheid regime.”
Following the start of these online protests, the Iranian authorities limited access of people to the internet according to NetBlocks, an organization that monitors web fonts around the world.
During the funeral in her hometown of Saqqez (Iranian Kurdistan province, in the west of the country), many women present had removed their veils.

Faced with demonstrations in several cities, the Iranian police responded with a violent crackdown. In particular, he opened fire on protesters, injuring 12 people. There are a total of 36 injured among the protesters.
The power denies the responsibility of the moral police in the death of Mahsa Amini and invokes the “heart problems” of the young woman, which would have justified her transfer to hospital after her arrest. The family of the latter rejects this version, alleging that her daughter has never had any health problems.
