Volodymyr Zelensky attacked Russia on Thursday after the worst rocket attack on Ukraine in weeks, which hit at least 10 of the country’s 27 regions.
“The enemy has fired 81 missiles in an attempt to intimidate the Ukrainians again and return to their miserable tactics. The occupiers can only terrorize civilians.”Zelensky said in an online statement listing the regions of Ukraine affected by the attacks.
At least four people, two men and two women, were killed this Thursday in Ukraine’s Lviv (west) region, and a fifth person died in the Dnipropetrovsk region, following a Russian attack, local authorities announced.
A Russian missile, which landed in a residential area of Zolotchiv, destroyed three buildings, Governor Maksym Kozytsky said on the Telegram social network.
A fifth person was killed and two injured in the Dnipropetrovsk region, where power infrastructure and industrial buildings were hit by bombings, Governor Serhii Lysak told the Associated Press news agency.
Air raid sirens sounded throughout Ukraine at night, including in the capital Kiev, where explosions were reported in two zones in the west of the city.
Air defense systems were activated across the country and it is still unknown how many missiles hit targets or how many were intercepted.
Kiev’s government said the city was attacked with rockets and “drones” (unmanned aerial vehicles) carrying explosives.
Kiev mayor Vitali Klitschko said at least two people were injured in the western part of the city, where vehicles went up in flames.
According to the military administration, 40% of consumers in Kiev are without electricity.
Russia carried out several attacks this morning on vital infrastructure and residential buildings in Ukraine, including in Karkhiv (east), hit by 15 rockets, Odessa (south) and Kiev.
The Zaporijia nuclear power plant, occupied by the Russian army, was also without connection to the Ukrainian electricity grid, guaranteeing the supply of electricity through 18 emergency generators with a capacity of ten days.
Shortly before 08:00, after seven hours of Russian attack, the alarms in Kiev were no longer heard. The last one took place on February 16.
