U.S. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is being treated at a hospital where he was admitted after suffering head trauma following a fall, spokesman David Popp said Thursday.
The senator will have tripped at an event Wednesday afternoon after being hospitalized, he said, without giving details of the 81-year-old politician’s health condition.
“He will need to stay in hospital for a few days for observation and treatment,” added David Popp, expressing his gratitude to the medical team responsible for his treatment.
That reports a “source familiar with the case”, reports television channel CNN McConnell fell at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in Washington DC, formerly the Trump International Hotel.
The senator attended an event for the Senate Leadership Fund, a fundraising organization.
Since 2007, the Kentucky senator has been the longest-serving legislator to lead Republicans in the Senate, but Democrats currently hold a slim majority in the Senate, by a margin of 51 to 49 seats.
McConnell and former President Donald Trump (2017-2021) separated in December 2020, after the presidential election, in November of that year, in which Joe Biden defeated the then president.
