War in Ukraine: Russian singing star publicly opposes military invasion

In Russia, Alla Pugacheva, 73, is a true icon. The singer denounced this Sunday “the death of our boys for illusory objectives that make our country a pariah and weigh on the lives of our citizens.”

It is a position that will upset even the highest peak of the Kremlin. Alla Pugacheva, a variety icon in Russia for decades, and perhaps one of the best-known singers in all the countries of the former USSR, has joined the ranks of Russian celebrities who oppose the war in Ukraine.

In an Instagram post on Sunday, Alla Pugacheva challenged the Russian Justice Ministry to label her a “foreign agent”, as it recently did with her husband, comedian Maxim Galkin. A status increasingly used by power to designate its opponents.

“Because I sympathize with my husband, an honest, honest and sincere person, a true Russian patriot, incorruptible, who wants his homeland to prosper and live in peace with freedom of expression,” the singer wrote.

“Illusory goals that make our country a pariah”

The 73-year-old star wrote the words on her Instagram account, which has 3.5 million followers. In particular, she expressed her desire to see “an end to the killing of our boys for illusory goals that make our country a pariah and weigh on the lives of our citizens.”

A true icon in Russia, Alla Pougatcheva has met Vladimir Putin several times in her career. In 2009 she received the Order of Merit for the Fatherland Medal from then Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

In March 2014, Alla Pugacheva had already signed a petition against the persecution of Andrei Makarevich, who was protesting against the annexation of Crimea and the war in Donbass.
