In 2021, the Spanish authorities seized about 100 tons of narcotics in 17 shipments to ships in international waters, notably in the North Atlantic and the Mediterranean.
In total, 91.3 tons of hashish and 8.4 tons of cocaine were seized, a value nearly 30% higher than 2020 and a record for the last decade, the Spanish Interior Ministry reported today.
In the period between 2017 and 2021, the Customs and State Security Inspection Services of the Tax Administration, under the Ministry of Finance, carried out 92 shipments in international waters that allowed the seizure of 273 tons of drugs.
The data is part of the 2021 balance sheet prepared by the Ministry of Interior’s Center for Intelligence against Terrorism and Organized Crime (CITCO) on shipments in international waters.
These operations are governed by the United Nations Conventions on the Law of the Sea of 1982 and Against the Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances of 1988, both ratified by Spain.
In 2021, Spain processed 27 boarding requests, 17 of which were executed, 14 with positive results and three without detection of banned substances.
