Kuleba asks Berlin to start training pilots in anticipation of ‘fighters’

Ukraine’s foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba on Sunday urged the German government to continue pilot training pending the availability of the “fighters” to the Ukrainian air force and asked for more ammunition.

“I do not expect the delivery of the fighters to take place in the near future, because logistically and technically it is a very difficult task,” Kuleba said in an interview published this Sunday by the German Sunday newspaper “Bild am Sonntag”.

Therefore, he defended that the training and instruction of Ukrainian pilots in Western fighter jets should start now, so that when the decision is made to deliver the planes, no time and many months of training are wasted.

On the supply of arms, Kuleba was convinced that Germany “will be able to help more with ammunition”, especially with artillery.

“There were meetings between Ukrainian representatives and the German arms industry, which asked the German government to sign contracts itself in my presence. [alemão]”he claimed.

Kuleba also referred to new Russian attacks on civilian infrastructure in Ukraine and underlined that the production of missiles and “drones” (unmanned aerial vehicles) in Russia could be stopped with “new and even tougher sanctions” against this industry, recalling that Ukraine is a proposal to that effect to the European Union (EU) within the framework of the G7 (Group of the Seven Most Industrialized Countries).

“I personally sent a list of companies directly involved in missile production. Unfortunately, we do not see these companies being punished enough,” he added, emphasizing that he was “very confused”.

“[A Ucrânia viu] some, some sanctions against companies involved in the production of ‘drones’ and missiles are included in the 10th EU sanctions package, but much more could have been done,” he added.

As for the heavy fighting in Bakhmut, Kuleba wondered what would change if Ukrainian troops withdrew.

“Russia would take Bakhmut and continue the offensive in Chasiv Yar and all subsequent cities,” he warned.

The Russian military offensive on Ukrainian territory, launched on February 24, 2022, plunged Europe into what is considered the most serious security crisis since World War II (1939-1945).
