North Korea claims to have launched two cruise missiles from a submarine

The shooting took place off the coastal city of Sinpo (eastern North Korea) on Sunday morning, according to KCNA. The South Korean army confirms for its part that it has detected the launch of a new missile.

Pyongyang launched two cruise missiles from a submarine on Sunday, the North Korean agency KCNA announced, a few hours after joint military exercises between Seoul and Washington.

The shooting took place off the coastal city of Sinpo (eastern North Korea) on Sunday morning, according to KCNA. The South Korean army, quoted by the Yonhap agency, confirms for its part that it has detected the launch of a new missile.

Pyongyang had already fired a short-range ballistic missile into the sea off its west coast on Thursday, according to the South Korean military.

In late February, North Korea announced that it had fired cruise missiles in response to escalating US and South Korean military exercises, calling it “a declaration of war.”

Relations between Pyongyang and Seoul are at their lowest point in several years, with talks stalled. In 2022, the North called its nuclear power status “irreversible” and conducted a series of missile and ballistic tests in violation of UN resolutions.
