Jamie Lee Curtis calls for “more women anywhere, anytime, at the same time”

Actress Jamie Lee Curtis, who won her first Oscar tonight at age 64 for her role in “Everything and Everywhere at the Same Time,” called for more gender parity in Hollywood and more female nominees in all categories.

“Obviously I would like to see a lot more women nominated, so that there is gender parity in all areas, in all categories,” the actress said, speaking in the Oscars backstage interview room. “We’re not close to that yet,” she said.

Jamie Lee Curtis considered it “surreal” to be among the nominees and to have won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, with the role of Deirdre Beaubeirdra that had already earned her a Screen Actors Guild award.

The actress said that the topic of diversity and inclusion implies a broader debate: “How do you include everyone when we have binary options,” she said, recalling that she has a transgender daughter.

“But by taking gender out of the category, I’m afraid it will lessen the opportunities for more women, which is something I’ve also been working to promote,” she said.

“It’s a complicated issue, but I think the most important thing is inclusion and more women,” she continued. “Basically more women anywhere, anytime, at the same time,” she said, referring to the title of the film that won her an Oscar tonight in Los Angeles and made history at the ceremony.

The theme of diversity was revisited several times throughout the evening behind the scenes, where the winners went to answer questions from journalists. Oscar winners for Best Documentary Short “The Elephant Whisperers,” Kartiki Gonsalves and Guneet Monga, also addressed the issue.

“They are two women from a country of 1.4 billion [de habitantes] and it is the first production from India to win,” said producer Guneet Monga. “Don’t wait for anyone,” he said. “You don’t need a seat at the table. Create your own table and sit at it.”

That’s what Sarah Palley did, who won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for “Voices of Women.” The filmmaker was very pleased with the Academy’s recognition of a film about women who overcome fear and discord and make their voices heard.

The 95th Academy Awards ceremony took place at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles.
