At least eight people have died as a result of the passage of Cyclone Freddy in Zambézia province, according to preliminary data released this Monday by the Ministry of Health.
Of the total number of deaths, seven were in the city of Quelimane, the provincial capital, and one in the district of Mocuba, Health Minister Armindo Tiago told media in Zambézia province, noting that these were preliminary data.
‘There is also considerable destruction of infrastructure’emphasized Armindo Tiago.
Cyclone Freddy has already lost strength and is now a tropical storm, but heavy rain is expected in central Mozambique until Wednesday.
It is the second time the weather has hit the country, after a first hit on February 24 that left 10 dead due to adverse conditions over several days.
The National Institute for Disaster Management (INGD) has opened shelters in recent days and issued warnings for the population to leave precarious homes and areas along the river or areas usually subject to flooding.
Several neighborhoods in the city of Quelimane are without energy and telecommunications.
In addition to Mozambique, the cyclone also hit Malawi, killing 39 in Blantyre, the city’s executive director said, quoted by the Associated Press news agency.
