At least eight dead after Cyclone Freddy passed through Mozambique

At least eight people died from the passage of Cyclone Freddy in the province of Zambézia, according to preliminary data released this Monday by the Ministry of Health.

Of the total number of deaths, seven occurred in the city of Quelimane, the provincial capital, and one in the district of Mocuba, Health Minister Armindo Tiago told the media in Zambézia province, noting that these are data preliminaries.

“There is also considerable destruction of infrastructure,” Armindo Tiago stressed.

Cyclone Freddy has already weakened and is now a tropical storm, but it is still expected to bring heavy rain through Wednesday to central Mozambique.

It is the second time that the weather has hit the country, after a first blow on February 24, which caused 10 deaths due to adverse conditions over several days.

The National Institute for Disaster Management (INGD) has opened reception centers and has launched alerts in recent days for the population to leave precarious houses and riverside areas or areas that are usually subject to flooding.

Several neighborhoods in the city of Quelimane are without electricity and without telecommunications.

In addition to Mozambique, the cyclone also hit Malawi, killing 39 people in Blantyre, according to the city’s executive director, quoted by the Associated Press agency.
