A 3-year-old girl, who had found a semi-automatic pistol in her parents’ house, fatally shot her one-year-old sister. The drama took place this Sunday in Houston, in the US state of Texas.
Local authorities, broadcast by US media, including CBS, reported that the girls were in a bedroom in the family apartment when the events occurred, around 8:00 p.m. Five adults were present: her mother, her stepfather, as well as family members. Apparently, the girls were left unattended unintentionally.
A single bullet was fired and paramedics pronounced the girl dead. An investigation has been opened and it must be determined if the parents will be prosecuted.
19,000 children killed or injured by firearms each year
County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez urged adults to keep their guns in “safe” places. “We have to do more than just tell the kids not to touch it,” he told reporters.
According to the NGO Everytown for Gun Safety, some 19,000 children and adolescents are killed or injured by firearms each year in the United States. Since the beginning of 2023, at least 58 children have been injured or killed by firearms, the organization notes.
