Maddie’s parents lose case against Portugal in the European Court of Human Rights

Maddie McCann’s parents, Kate and Gerry, lost their case at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) over the complaint filed against Portugal. The decision was made public Tuesday morning.

In the court based in Strasbourg, France, the complaint against the Portuguese justice was discussed for having acquitted Gonçalo Amaral of compensating the parents of the British girl -disappeared in Lagos, in May 2007- after the complaints made by the former inspector of cop. The Judiciary in a book and a television program.

For Kate and Gerry McCann, the words of the leader of the investigation into the disappearance of their daughter, then three years old, represented a violation of their right to respect for private life and the right to the presumption of innocence. But, in the court’s opinion, the Portuguese justice did well to acquit the former PJ inspector.

At the same time, the British couple pointed out to the Portuguese authorities an alleged lack of balance between the different interests at stake, namely between their right to privacy and the right of the opposing parties to freedom of expression.
