The International Criminal Court on Friday issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin on war crimes charges for his alleged role in child abductions in Ukraine.
In the statement, the ICC accuses Putin of being “allegedly responsible for the war crime of illegal deportation of population (children) and illegal transfer of population (children) from the occupied areas of Ukraine to the Russian Federation.”
The ICC also issued an arrest warrant for Maria Alekseyevna Lvova-Belova, Commissioner for Children’s Rights in the Office of the President of the Russian Federation on similar charges.
The statement added that the orders are confidential, “to protect victims and witnesses,” as well as to safeguard the normal development of the investigations.
