Putin’s arrest warrant “is the beginning of a process of accountability”

The high representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs considered this Friday that the arrest warrant against the Russian president “is the beginning of a process of accountability” for alleged war crimes committed in Ukraine.

“The decision of the International Criminal Court (ICC) to issue an arrest warrant against Vladimir Putin for the war crime of the horrific deportation and transfer of children from Ukraine to Russia is the beginning of a process of accountability,” he wrote. Josep Borrell on the social network Twitter, shortly after the ICC decision was made known.

The head of European diplomacy added that “there can be no impunity” for the Kremlin for the war crimes being investigated in The Hague based on evidence collected in the territories previously occupied by the Russian military: “We appreciate and support the work of the ICC”.

The International Criminal Court today issued an arrest warrant for the Russian president for war crimes, namely his alleged involvement in child abductions in Ukraine.

In a statement, the ICC accuses Putin of being “allegedly responsible for the war crime of illegally deporting a population [crianças] and illegal population transfer [crianças] from the occupied areas of Ukraine to the Russian Federation”.

The ICC also issued an arrest warrant for Maria Alekseyevna Lvova-Belova, Commissioner for Children’s Rights in the Office of the President of the Russian Federation on similar charges.

In reaction to this decision, the spokeswoman for Russian diplomacy, Maria Zakharova, described the announcement of the issuance of the arrest warrant as insignificant: “The decision of the International Criminal Court does not make sense for our country, even from the point of view from a legal point of view. . ”, she writes.

“Russia does not belong to the Rome Statute and has no obligations under it,” the spokeswoman recalled.

The Ukrainian Presidency, for its part, welcomed the decision, noting that it is the beginning of a process to condemn Putin.
