The two environmentalists painted the facade of the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, Italy orange this Friday and were detained by police.
Florence Mayor Dario Nardella was on the scene when police stopped the two activists and responded to the situation. Videos on social media show the mayor pushing one of the detainees.

This is reported by the Italian news agency ANSA. Dario Nardella helped wash the paint off the monument and climbed onto a mobile scaffold equipped with a garden hose and brush to personally remove the paint from the facade.

“The attack on art, culture and beauty, non-violent and made for the good of humanity, can never justify the struggle for a cause, not even the most acceptable one,” Dario Nardella wrote on Twitter, adding that “more than 5,000 liters water were consumed to clean the Palazzo Vecchio”.
