The pro-Russian authorities of the Zaporizhia region announced on Tuesday the signing of a decree on the formation of “volunteer battalions”.
This region located in the southeast of Ukraine will thus have militias, after similar decisions taken in Donetsk and Lugansk, also dominated by the Russian military.
Yevhen Balitski, the pro-Russian governor of the region, said on his Telegram account: “Based on numerous appeals from the inhabitants of the region, I signed a decree on the formation of volunteer battalions in the Zaporizhia region.”
However, he added that “the recruitment of volunteers will be announced soon,” despite acknowledging that there are already several fighting alongside the Russian military.
This decision was announced on the same day that the pro-Russians who control Kherson made the same announcement.
For their part, the pro-Russians of Kherson, Donetsk and Lugansk announced that they will hold a referendum on integration into the Russian Federation, between September 23 and 27.
