Russian submarines of the Black Sea Fleet practiced launching torpedoes with practice grenades on Monday, the Russian defense ministry said.
“The crews of the Black Sea Fleet’s diesel-electric submarines ‘Kolpino’ and ‘Stari Oskol’ conducted torpedo launches with practice projectiles under water conditions”the ministry said in a statement quoted by the agency EFE.
The Black Sea Fleet, dependent on the Russian Navy, with bases in the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, operates in areas close to the territorial waters of Ukraine, the target of invasion by Russia.
Russian submarines have drilled and submerged to the expected depth for target practice, the Russian military command said.
“The submarine crews successfully completed the stated tasks and conducted torpedo launches from a submerged position against a naval target simulating a warship at a safe distance,” the Russian defense said.
The Russian Defense Ministry said the effectiveness of using these weapons will be evaluated after data collection from the exercises.
The entity added that these practices are a mandatory part of submarine crew preparation and are carried out in accordance with plans established by the Russian military command.
