The 27 member states of the European Union (EU) on Monday approved a €2 billion package to produce large caliber ammunition and make it available to Ukraine, the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security announced.
“A historic decision. As part of my proposal, member states have agreed to fire one million artillery shells over the next 12 months”wrote Josep Borrell on the social network Twitter.
The package was approved at a meeting of EU foreign and defense ministers in Brussels.
The two billion euros is intended for the production of 155 mm ammunition that Ukraine requested weeks ago to continue to repel the invasion of the Russian Federation that began more than a year ago.
The Russian military offensive on Ukrainian territory, launched on February 24 last year, plunged Europe into what is considered the most serious security crisis since World War II (1939-1945).
