China, Russia reject condemnation of North Korean missile tests

China and Russia again rejected a UN resolution on Monday to condemn North Korea’s repeated ballistic missile tests, blaming the United States for the situation.

Beijing and Moscow again opposed calls by Washington and other countries for the United Nations Security Council to respond to North Korea’s ballistic tests, during a meeting at the UN’s highest body held in the wake of the recent Pyongyang regime releases.

North Korea said on Monday its military conducted a nuclear counterstrike exercise over the weekend, attended by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, and comes after a new type of intercontinental ballistic missile ( ICBM) were fired at the 16

According to the North Korean regime, these actions are a response to the joint maneuvers carried out by South Korea and the United States in the south of the peninsula, seen by Pyongyang as a test to invade its territory.

At the UN Security Council, Washington called on the international community to respond firmly to Pyongyang and considered that the position of Russia and China (two permanent members of the Council with veto power) encourages the North Korean regime to continue down that path.

“How many times will North Korea have to violate its obligations under UN Security Council resolutions for China and Russia to stop protecting the regime?” -Greenfield.

China and Russia have made it clear that they continue to oppose a resolution condemning the tests or toughening sanctions, calling instead for sanctions against Pyongyang to be lifted.

In recent years, the Security Council, unopposed by China and Russia, has imposed sanctions on North Korea over its illegal weapons tests, accusing Pyongyang of preparing an illicit atomic program.

According to the Russian delegation to the UN, the futility of this approach has been demonstrated and now it is necessary to opt for another path, mainly that of dialogue, for which Moscow and Beijing demand that Washington take the first steps.

Both countries blamed Washington’s policies for the increase in tension, citing the agreement that will allow Australia to acquire nuclear-powered submarines, within the framework of the new AUKUS military alliance that brings together the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom and that formalized in September 2021.
