Texas school shooting leaves one dead, one injured and one arrested

An underage student opened fire at a school in Dallas on Monday morning, killing one student and wounding another.

According to Arlington Police Chief Al Jones, a male student who was shot died in hospital and the female victim is receiving medical treatment after she was “grazed” by shrapnel, which caused non-life-threatening injuries.

In Texas, people convicted of capital murder can be sentenced to death.

The shooting broke out on the campus of a high school in suburban Arlington around 7 a.m. local time, before many students arrived for their first day of school after spring break, police and school officials said.

Another student was arrested at the scene and charged with murder, Al Jones said at a press conference hours after the incident. He declined to name the shooter because he was a minor and revealed he is in a juvenile detention center nearby.

The police chief also said the gun used in the crime has been recovered, but the reason for the shooting and where he got the gun from remain unknown.

Anita Foster, spokeswoman for the Arlington Independent School District, said the school was closed during the shooting and that school buses and other students arriving at the school were diverted off campus before classes began.

Police said they searched the school at 10:40 am local time.
