The prime minister will participate this Wednesday, in New York, in a meeting of leaders of the High-Level Panel for a Sustainable Oceanic Economy, which includes countries such as Norway, France, Kenya and the United States.
António Costa arrived in New York on Monday to participate in the general debate of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly, in which he will speak on Thursday, returning to Lisbon that day.
Today at the end of the day, the Prime Minister will be at the usual reception offered by the President of the United States, Joe Biden, to the participants in the UN General Assembly, at the Natural History Museum.
The Secretary of State for the Sea, José Maria Costa, spoke to journalists in New York about the High-Level Panel for a Sustainable Oceanic Economy, referring that this “is an organization of 17 countries” of which Portugal, currently committed to “mobilizing more investors”.
“Right now the discussion on the table is how to improve the financing of the sustainable blue economy, that has been the preparatory debate”, declared José Maria Costa.
According to the Secretary of State, “there is concern around the world regarding some of the priority areas, namely the conservation of marine protected areas, and how many countries, that is, less developed countries, will be able to carry out this same conservation without the middle”.
Australia, Canada, Chile, Fiji, Ghana, Indonesia, Jamaica, Japan, Mexico, Namibia, Palau and the United Kingdom are the other countries that are part of this forum.
In the middle of the day in Nova Iorque, the Prime Minister will have to meet with William Ruto, newly elected President of Quénia, the country with which Portugal participated in the organization of the 2nd Conference of the Oceans of the United Nations, held in Lisbon , in June.
António Costa has also scheduled another bilateral meeting for today, with the Head of State of Senegal, Mack Sall, acting president of the African Union.
