US President Joe Biden announced on Monday that he has passed a law that would allow the release of documents about the origins of the new coronavirus pandemic that emerged in China.
“We need to get to the bottom of the causes of the COVID-19 pandemic to make sure we know how to prevent future pandemics,” Biden said in a statement.
“The government will release and publish as much information as possible,” but with respect for “national security,” he promised.
Initially promoted by the Republican opposition, the text was eventually passed by the Democrats and passed unanimously by the House of Representatives, with a Republican majority.
Federal Police (FBI) Director Christopher Wray recently estimated that an accident in a lab in China was “highly likely” at the origin of the pandemic, shortly after a similar hypothesis was advanced by the Department of Energy.
The scientific community remains divided between those defending the animal transmission hypothesis and those defending the Wuhan lab escape thesis.
