“China must not provide lethal aid to Russia”

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Tuesday expressed his support for “any initiative that can lead to sustainable peace,” referring to the Chinese president’s contribution to a plan to end the war in Ukraine. Stoltenberg warns of the importance of respect for “territorial sovereignty” to guarantee a lasting peace.

“A ceasefire, or any solution that does not respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, will only be a way to freeze the war and ensure that Russia can reconstitute, regroup and attack again,” he said, considering that “this is not it will be so.” a just and sustainable peace [e] it will only help Russia to keep the territory it illegally occupied.”

The NATO Secretary General admits some expectations about Xi Jinping’s trip to Moscow, mainly because the meeting agenda with Vladimir Putin includes the discussion of the Chinese contribution to a peace plan.

“We welcome any initiative, any plan that can lead to a just and sustainable peace,” Stoltenberg said, admitting that “China’s peace proposal includes some positive aspects and elements” that he supports: “For example, the importance of nuclear security, the protection of civilians and, not least, what underlies the importance of sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence”.

Stoltenberg does not hide an apparent discomfort regarding the “pattern of proximity” between Beijing and Moscow, which began even before the war. For that reason, he left a warning to Xi Jinping.

“China must not provide Russia with lethal aid. That would be supporting an illegal war, which would only serve to prolong the war and support Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine. This is something China clearly should not do,” he warned. admitting that NATO “has no proof” that these renditions are taking place.
