Brazilian police arrest suspects in plans to kill Sergio Moro

The Federal Police (PF) began an operation on the morning of Wednesday, April 22, investigating members of a criminal organization suspected of planning, killing and kidnapping authorities in Brazil, according to a publication on Twitter by the Minister of Justice, Flavio Dino. A little later, Senator Sergio Moro (União Brasil) declared via the same social network that he was one of the targets and identified the First Command of the Capital (PCC) as the criminal group behind the plan.

“An assassination plan against several public agents was investigated and identified, including a senator and a prosecutor,” Flávio Dino wrote. “Today the Federal Police are carrying out arrests and searches against this gang. My compliments to the PF teams for their important work”.

Subsequently, Moro wrote that “About the PCC’s retaliatory plans against me, my family and other public agents, I will make a statement in the Senate Tribune at noon.”

The targets rented farms, houses and even an office next to the addresses of Sergio Moro, judge of Operation Lava Jato and minister of Jair Bolsonaro. The family of the current senator would also have been watched for months by the criminal organization, according to investigators.

According to the PF, 24 search and seizure warrants and 11 arrest warrants are being executed in São Paulo, Paraná – where the main targets are – Rondônia and Mato Grosso do Sul. At least six people have been arrested in Campinas, São Paulo state. In addition to murder, according to the PF, the suspects also planned to kidnap the government at the same time.

Another target of the group, besides Moro, was Lincoln Gakyia, of the Special Action Group for the Repression of Organized Crime (Gaeco), in Presidente Prudente, inland São Paulo. According to the G1 website, a commander of the Marechaussee was also the target of the attacks. “It was a national attack,” Dino said in response to posts from columnist Andreia Sadi’s blog.

Investigators say the plans began last year and are said to be in retaliation by members of the criminal organization over a government regulation banning intimate visits in federal prisons. When he was Minister of Public Security, Moro ordered the transfer of the head of the PCC, Marcos Camacho, known as Marcola, and other members of the top of the organization to maximum security prisons, to try to isolate and weaken them.

Considered one of the largest criminal organizations in the world, the PCC is active inside and outside prisons in Brazil and internationally on drug trafficking and other crimes.
