Six people were killed after a light vehicle crashed into a work area on Baltimore’s Beltway and hit construction workers, Maryland police said Wednesday.
The collision occurred at 12:40 p.m. (4:40 p.m. in Lisbon) on Interstate 695, in the Woodlawn area, police said in a statement.
Emergency services at the scene pronounced six people dead, all construction workers working on the Baltimore Beltway.
The driver of the light vehicle was taken to hospital, police said.
Preliminary investigations into the accident revealed that the vehicle passed through the work zone and struck several construction workers before flipping over.
The accident closed the ring road in both directions for hours, causing traffic congestion in the western part of the city.
The Baltimore County Fire Department called the accident “extremely serious” and urged motorists to avoid the area.
Baltimore County executive Johnny Olszewski called the incident “horrific.”
“We extend our sincere condolences to the families, friends and loved ones of those who lost their lives in today’s tragic accident.”stressed Olszewski via the social network Twitter.
The cause of the accident is under investigation.
