The president of the European Council, Charles Michel, reiterated on Wednesday that in the war in Ukraine the only aggressor is Russia, in reaction to Moscow’s announcement of partial mobilization in the country.
“In this war, there is only one aggressor, Russia, and one country under attack, Ukraine,” Michel wrote on his Twitter account, adding that the European Union’s support for Ukraine will remain firm.
“The Kremlin announces the mobilization on the International Day of Peace 2022, while, in the UN General Assembly, countries work for cooperation, security and prosperity,” he added.
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Wednesday a “partial mobilization” of the country’s citizens, as the war in Ukraine approaches the seventh month of conflict, in a message addressed to the nation.
The measure, which is already in force, is due to the need to defend the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, stressed the Russian head of state, in the message broadcast on television.
Russia, which invaded Ukraine on February 24, is ready to use “all means” at its disposal to “protect itself”, said Putin, who has accused the West of trying to destroy the country.
