Dozens of people marched through the streets of Hong Kong in the first authorized demonstration in three years despite strict police rules.
Residents of Tseung Kwan O Town, one of Hong Kong’s new cities built mainly on reclaimed land, marched to protect the ocean.
The lawsuits include denouncing the construction of “nasty” facilities, which they see as contradictory environmental policies.
Protesters, with visible identification, marched through the streets along a cordoned-off route, under the watchful eye of dozens of security agents. Authorities limited the march to about 100 people, although more than 300 had applied to join.
In addition, police warned of the risk of “criminals” infiltrating the event to instigate violence, the South China Morning Post reported.
The protest was the first since 2020 against a government policy and comes after all restrictions due to covid-19 were lifted.
