Greece will hold parliamentary elections on May 21

Parliamentary elections will be held in Greece on May 21, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced on Tuesday, a month after the two-train disaster that killed 57 people.

“The country and its citizens need a clear horizon (…), the elections will take place on May 21″declared Mitsotakis during the cabinet meeting.

The leader of the right-wing New Democracy (ND) party, in power since 2019, has faced a wave of protests across the country since the accident between two trains on February 28, which killed 57 people and caused serious injuries. problems came to light affecting the Greek railways.

At the height of the protests, about 65,000 people took to the streets on March 8, reminiscent of the large demonstrations that took place in the early 2010s, when the government of Greece, in the midst of a financial crisis, introduced economic measures.

“We’re here to fix [os erros]”said 55-year-old Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

The gap in voting intentions between ND and its main rival, Syriza – the radical left party of former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras – has narrowed since the accident involving the two trains.
