The US must prepare for extraordinary ammunition consumption

US military chief of staff General Mark Milley warned on Wednesday that a war between the country and another superpower would lead to “extraordinary” ammunition consumption and that the country should prepare for it.

Ukraine and the Russian Federation have used a large amount of artillery ammunition since the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces on February 24, 2024, which has raised questions about the supply the US has, plus they are a major ammunition supplier to Kiev.

“The incredible level of ammunition consumption” is a “great lesson” from the conflict in Ukraine, which remains a “limited regional war,” Milley said.

“If there was a war on the Korean Peninsula or a power war between the US and Russia, the ammunition consumption would be extraordinary,” he added.

“We still have work to do to make sure our supplies are ready” for all situations, Milley said.

On Tuesday, a Pentagon official, Gabe Camarillo, said the US was investing in increased production of artillery munitions.

Camarillo explained that it wanted to produce more 155mm ammunition, launchers and Javelin missiles, as well as ammunition for Himar’s precision missile launchers.
