After three months in the United States, Jair Bolsonaro is expected to return to Brazil this Thursday, at 11:30 a.m. Lisbon time.
According to him, the intention is to “do politics”, “walk around the country” and “wield the flag of Brazilian conservatism”.
Bolsonaro, who flew to Florida two days before the inauguration of his successor, Lula da Silva, returns at a time when he is in turmoil over the Saudi jewelry scandal. He did not declare a case with precious stones worth three million euros offered by the king of the Middle Eastern country and omitted to have been in possession of a second. After being forced to return this second case, he learned of the existence of a third, hiding in the house of Nelson Piquet, his notorious supporter.
In addition, due to the almost total silence during the six months since the electoral defeat, observers of the Brazilian press point out that the former president is politically minor.
On the other hand, a possible mass bath upon arrival in Brasilia must be vetoed by the local police, for fear of new incidents in the city after the attacks on the headquarters of the three powers, on January 8.
The date of Bolsonaro’s return, however, is not random: he returns on the eve of March 31, the date on which the military usually celebrates the coup that gave rise to the military dictatorship from 1964 to 1985. During the government of Bolsonaro, the date was marked. Lula’s government, on the contrary, has already warned, through the Minister of Defense, that the coup will not be commemorated and will even be present, through the Minister of Human Rights, in demonstrations against that date.
Military clubs throughout Brazil, however, must celebrate the 59th anniversary of the dictatorship and Bolsonaro’s presence at one of those celebrations cannot be ruled out to measure his power among the army, even after the electoral defeat.
