At least 13 people were killed in India on Thursday after the floor of a temple collapsed, police said.
About 25 Hindu worshipers fell into a well flanked by a ladder – used in religious rituals – when the floor covering the well gave way under the weight. The accident took place in the city of Indore, in the central state of Madhya Pradesh.
“We have rescued almost a dozen people,” the police’s Manish Kaporiya told AFP. He added that rescue operations continued while survivors were taken to hospital.
Images broadcast on television channels and on social media show paramedics laying ropes and ladders to reach people trapped in the pit.
In a major accident at Mahadev Jhulelal Temple in Indore, more than 25 people fell down a stairwell. The incident happened on the occasion of Ram Navami when the temple witnessed crowds. The roof of the stairwell reportedly collapsed, causing the accident.
