Russia’s head of diplomacy, Sergei Lavrov, will chair a UN Security Council meeting in New York in April, where Russia will hold the rotating presidency of the United Nations’ executive body.
“Another important event of the Russian Presidency will be the Council’s high-level public debate [de Segurança] on “Effective Multilateralism through Upholding the Principles of the Charter of the United Nations”. This meeting will be chaired by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov”spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told the press.
Zakharova added that Lavrov is expected to chair a discussion session on the Middle East on April 25.
On Thursday, Ukraine called Russia’s future presidency of the UN Security Council a “bad joke”.
“Russia has usurped its place. It is waging a colonial war. Its president is a war criminal wanted by the International Criminal Court for child abduction”said Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitro Kuleba.
Russia will take over the presidency of the United Nations executive body for a month from Saturday, after Mozambique.
At the UN, Russia says it is standing up to the “collective West”, which it has marginalized from the world’s nations since the launch of its military offensive in Ukraine in February 2022.
Lavrov’s last visit to the United Nations, in New York, took place last September during the General Assembly.
