Pope Francis spent a restful night and is seeing a marked improvement in his health, a Vatican source said this Friday morning.
The head of the Catholic Church, aged 86, has been admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital suffering from an infectious bronchitis that required the administration of antibiotics, the medical team clarified on Thursday. The treatment resulted in a “marked improvement in his state of health”, so the pope is expected to be able to return home to the Vatican “in the coming days”. However, he will not preside over Easter celebrations.
Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals, has already announced that he will be the one to celebrate Easter Mass, but that the Pope will have to be present in St. Peter’s Basilica and deliver the Urbi et Orbi message.
On Thursday, Francisco felt well enough to eat, pray and work in the private room he occupies on the tenth floor of the hospital. “Last night was also peaceful,” said a Vatican source.
