Eight dead migrants have been found in a swamp in Canada. According to local police, the migrants were trying to cross the border into the United States of America.
According to the authorities, quoted by Agence France-Presse, the victims, including two children, were discovered near an overturned boat that belonged to a missing man from the Akwesasne Mohawk community.
“In total, eight bodies were recovered from the water,” local police chief Shawn Dulude said at a news conference.
The bodies of six people from two families – one of Romanian origin with a Canadian passport and the other from India – were found on Thursday night, including that of a child under the age of three.
In the press conference this Friday, the discovery of two other people was confirmed, a minor “Canadian citizen of Romanian origin and a woman who is believed to be from India.”
Canadian authorities believe that they were all trying to enter the United States illegally through Canada.
Mohawk tribal territory encompasses the Canadian provinces of Quebec and Ontario and the US state of New York.
The capsized boat was described as “too small” to handle the weather conditions of rain, sleet, and high winds.
Dulude added that, on some occasions, this type of crossing was facilitated by the local population, mainly young people attracted by money or exploited by criminal organizations.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau regretted what he described as “a devastating situation” and sent a message of condolences to the families of the deceased in statements to journalists.
