Donald Trump’s lawyers this Sunday classified the ex-president’s accusation as “political persecution” ahead of his hearing this Tuesday in Manhattan, New York.
Attorney Joe Tacopina dismissed charges expected to be filed against Trump in connection with paying a bribe to a pornographic actress in 2018. “This is a case of political persecution,” the attorney told CNN.
Joe Tacopina also criticized the prosecution’s likely key witness, Michael Cohen, a former Trump attorney arrested on related charges, who turned on the former boss, calling him “a convicted pathological liar.”
Donald Trump’s hearing on Tuesday will go down in history as the first time a president or former president has faced criminal charges. The charges remain confidential.
Tacopina said he doesn’t expect to ask for an immediate dismissal because Trump’s team has yet to study the exact allegations.
Another Trump attorney, James Trusty, told the Fox News Sunday that, based on “what we assume is the charge, it will have legal weaknesses that will be subject to a legitimate motion to dismiss it in advance”.
As for the proceedings in Manhattan, on Tuesday authorities are preparing for demonstrations in support of and against Trump.
“I honestly don’t know how this is going to happen, I hope it goes as smoothly as possible,” Tacopina said. He added that he expected to know more on Monday.
Trump’s lawyer also said he hopes his client is not forced to settle perpetrator walk (criminal walk), in which he would enter the court handcuffed before the media, remembering that the former president will be under the protection of the secret services.
“I hope this is as painless and elegant as possible,” said Joe Tacopina.
