Parisians were called this Sunday to vote in a referendum on electric scooters for rent in the city and almost 90% of voters want the service to end.
It is a blow for the operators that provide this means of transport and a victory for those who defend road safety.
According to results released by the Paris mayor’s office, nearly 90% of Parisians voted to ban electric scooter rentals in the city. The mayoress, Anne Hidalgo, promised to respect the results of the referendum.
The city of Paris was a pioneer in introducing these services, but it is also close to being a pioneer in banning them.
“We are happy. It is what we have been fighting for for more than four years,” Arnaud Kielbasa, co-founder of the Apacauvi charity, which represents victims of scooter accidents, told Agence France-Presse (AFP).
“All Parisians say they are nervous on the streets, nervous when they cross the streets. You have to look everywhere,” said Kielbasa, whose wife and youngest daughter were hit by a scooter driver: “That’s why they voted against they”.
