At least 19 people were killed in a landslide in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Sunday, according to local residents and officials.
The disaster occurred late in the morning in the village of Bulwa, in Masisi, territory of North Kivu province, according to Chadrack Mbukanirwa Ndibanja, one of the village chiefs.
Investigation on Monday
It said at least 19 people were killed in the landslide and the search for other victims would continue on Monday.
Alphonse Mushesha Mihingano, a local administrator, confirmed this initial assessment, although he stressed that it was provisional.
Some 25 mothers, accompanied by their children, were washing clothes in a stream at the foot of a mountain when the collapse occurred, burying some of them, it added.
