The High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, urged China on Thursday to use its influence over Russia to end the war in Ukraine.
In a meeting on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, Borrell conveyed to Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi “European expectations that China will use its influence over Russia to end the war, which is causing a food crisis , energy and financial instability”. around the world,” according to a statement issued by the High Representative’s press office.
Borrell also referred to the “precarious” situation around the Zaporiya nuclear power plant, stressing that a nuclear accident could happen “at any time”, and that a way to avoid a nuclear crisis should be discussed as a priority.
The foreign ministers of the European Union agreed this Thursday to prepare new sanctions against Russia, which will materialize as soon as possible, as announced by Borrell.
This new package of sanctions, in response to Moscow’s decision to mobilize 300,000 reservists, will affect new sectors of the Russian economy, including technology, and will include new individuals.
In addition to discussing Russia’s war against Ukraine, Borrell and Wang discussed human rights issues, including convening an EU-China Human Rights Dialogue to discuss issues of concern, the statement concluded.
