Indonesia: a magnitude 6.1 earthquake is recorded off the islands of Sumatra

The epicenter is in North Sumatra. The American Institute of Geophysics stressed that no tsunami warning had been issued at this time.

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake was felt around 9:59 p.m. local time Monday off the islands of Sumatra, Indonesia, according to the USGS, the American Institute of Geophysics.

The quake’s epicenter is southwest of the North Sumatra city of Padangsidempuan at a depth of 84 kilometers, the USGS said, stressing that no tsunami warning had been issued at this time.

Indonesia’s seismology agency has asked people living near the epicenter to be wary of possible aftershocks. Major Indonesian media did not report immediate damage.

“Our house shook strongly”

“The earthquake was quite strong and prolonged. It was not as usual. This time our house was shaken hard,” said Dody, a resident of North Tapanuli in North Sumatra, who, like many Indonesians, goes by only one name.

Indonesia experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity due to its position on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” where tectonic plates collide.

On November 21, a magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck the West Java province on the main island of Java, killing 602 people.
