Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni on Sunday called on African leaders to reject “the promotion of homosexuality” and “save the world” from it, reports The Guardian. According to British media, the president of Uganda has hinted that he will sign the “anti-homosexuality law 2023” passed last month by the Parliament of his country.
According to Yoweri Museveni, homosexuality is “a great threat and danger to the procreation of the human species.”
“Africa should lead the way in saving the world from this degeneracy and decay, which is truly dangerous for humanity. If people of the opposite sex stop liking each other, how will the human species reproduce?” she asserted.
A law denounced by the UN and the United States
The text was voted on by the Ugandan parliament on March 21 during a heated session, with numerous amendments. Neither legislators nor analysts know exactly what the legislation provides, reports AFP.
According to LGBT+ rights activists, if Yoweri Museveni ratifies this law, anyone who engages in homosexual acts could be sentenced to life in prison. And the death penalty is provided for in case of recidivism.
Included in Ugandan law, the death penalty has not been applied for years.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, denounced a law “probably among the worst of its kind in the world.” The United States, for its part, threatened the Kampala authorities with “repercussions”, particularly economic ones.
