Islamic State leader responsible for attacks in Europe in Syria dies

A leader of the extremist group Islamic State (IS), responsible for attacks in Europe, was killed on Tuesday in a US operation in Syria, the US military command for the Middle East (Centcom) announced.

Khaled Aydd Ahmad al-Jaburi was, among other things, “responsible for planning Islamic State attacks in Europe,” it said in a statement.

Centcom stressed that the death of this official would “temporarily disrupt the organization’s ability to foment attacks abroad.”

The US military command did not clarify whether the bombing took place in Syria, but specified that no civilians were killed or injured in the attack.

“IS continues to pose a threat to the region and beyond,” Centcom chief General Mike Kurilla was quoted as saying in the same note.

“Even weakened, the group is still capable of conducting operations in the region, with the intention of attacking beyond the Middle East,” he said.

Since the territorial defeat of IS in Syria in 2019, several hundred US soldiers deployed in the northeast of the country continue to fight alongside the Kurdish-dominated Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) against suspected IS members.

In October 2019, the US announced the death of IS chief Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in a US operation in northwestern Syria.
