Finland is now the 31st member state of NATO and its entry was made official with the delivery of documentation by the Secretary of State of the United States of America (USA), Antony Blinken.
“With the delivery of these documents, we declare Finland the 31st member state of the Alliance [Atlântica]”, said Blinken during the ceremony at the headquarters of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in Brussels, Belgium, where the flag of the Nordic country was raised for the first time along with the flags of the other member states.
The United States is one of the signatories of the treaty that gave rise to the Atlantic Alliance in 1949. Portugal is also part of the group of 12 founding members of NATO.
Helsinki’s official accession takes place on the same day that NATO celebrates 74 years of existence.
