The headquarters of the European People’s Party (EPP), in Brussels, was searched on Tuesday by Belgian and German police authorities, as part of an ongoing investigation in Germany, the party revealed in a statement.
“The European People’s Party confirms that representatives of the Belgian and German police authorities visited the party’s headquarters in Brussels on Tuesday, April 4. The visit is linked to an ongoing investigation in Thuringia,” the PPE statement read. .
The party adds that “it is cooperating in full transparency with the authorities involved, providing all relevant information and documentation”, but, “since it is an ongoing judicial investigation”, it refuses to provide any further information.
Party sources told the Spanish news agency EFE that the investigation is not linked to the ‘Qatargate’ scandal – an alleged bribery scheme of MEPs by Qatar and Morocco – but to a contractor who worked for the EPP during the campaign. to the 2019 European elections, as well as one of its subcontractors in Germany.
