International Red Cross will eliminate 1500 jobs

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) announced this Tuesday that it will eliminate 1,500 jobs after a set of measures with which it wants to save 433 million euros.

The cuts in these jobs will occur over the “next 12 months around the world” through “hiring freezes and natural rotation”, but the organization wants the number of people affected to be “minimized as much as possible”.

“We will do everything possible to help affected team members and we are committed to adopting social responsibility measures to mitigate the impact of job losses in the institution,” read a statement released this afternoon.

The non-governmental organization explains that, in 2022, it registered a deficit of 141 million euros, a result that it justifies with inflation and the freezing of promised and “unfulfilled” donations.

Now, the ICRC explains that it wants to concentrate on the most central tasks of the organization, such as sending aid to conflict zones and promoting international humanitarian law.

Even so, “at least 20 of the 350 places” in which the Red Cross operates will be closed, especially those that “could be covered by another ICRC office” or that “could be occupied by other humanitarian partners or development organizations”.

To act by 2023, the ICRC is asking donors for €2.8 billion, which it says is “an increase of just 0.3%” compared to last year’s target, which included an “increase” in programs due to the war in Ukraine.
