Jacinda Ardern refuses payment, but takes on role of fighting extremism online

Jacinda Ardern will work in the community that she and Emmanuel Macron created after the terrorist attack on a mosque in the city of Christchurch, in which 51 people died. The person responsible for the attack, a white supremacist, broadcast it live on the internet.

The Christchurch Call, created two months after the attack, brings together 55 countries, including Portugal, more than a dozen companies, such as Amazon, Twitter, Meta and Microsoft, and 55 civil society organizations from different states.

Ardern, representative of New Zealand, will share the presidency with France to advance the priorities defined at the summit, which took place last year. Among these priorities is the increase in the number of service providers online, that make up Christchurch Call, and testing and improving emergency response protocols, better coordinating information sharing.

Increasing community understanding of the influence of algorithms on access to radical and terrorist content, listening to the most affected groups (women, LGBTQI+, and ethnic minorities) is also a priority.

Chris Hipkins explained, during Jacinda Arden’s appointment, that the attack was a defining moment for the country and for the Ardern leadership, with the Christchurch Call being a response to the attack.

“The Christchurch call is a foreign policy priority for the government and Jacinda Ardern is uniquely positioned to advance the goal of removing extremist content online,” said the head of government.

The former prime minister will take office from April 17 and will answer only to Chris Hipkins.

Jacinda Ardern defended, this Tuesday in the first interview after leaving the Government, that she still has a personal duty to the Islamic community, hit by the 2019 attack. The time and passion necessary for the position, refusing to receive any remuneration.
