Stoltenberg warns of “historic error” and implications of Chinese aid to Russia

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg warned China on Wednesday of the “profound implications” of any military aid to Russia in its invasion of Ukraine, saying it would be a “historic mistake” to help the Kremlin.

“The Allies have made it clear that any deadly aid [da China] It will be a historic mistake with far-reaching consequences.”warned the Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) at a press conference at the headquarters of the Atlantic Alliance in Brussels, Belgium, after a meeting between the foreign ministers of the alliance and the representatives of South Korea Africa, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.

Asked about the warning he issued, Stoltenberg did not specify what consequences it would have: “There is no need to go into detail, but China knows what will happen.”

And he criticized the People’s Republic of China for “the resonance of Russian propaganda” and for “continuing refusal to condemn its brutal aggression” against Ukraine.

From the perspective of the secretary general of the politico-military organization that includes Portugal and 30 other countries, Beijing and Moscow are trying to destabilize and rearrange the international geopolitical scenario.

“It is therefore all the more important that we continue together,” he insisted, adding that NATO’s current 31 member states (Finland’s accession was formalized on Tuesday) agreed that “Sweden should become an ally as soon as possible “.

Sweden and Finland applied for membership at the same time in May 2022, but Helsinki was eventually admitted first, as Swedish claims have not yet received support from member states Hungary and Turkey.

In the case of Turkey, the government is demanding that Sweden stop supporting Kurdish groups considered terrorists by Ankara.

Finland and Sweden applied for membership just months after the start of the Russian military offensive in Ukraine, marking the end of the traditional policy of military non-alignment.

Finland’s official status as the 31st member of NATO took place on the first day of the meeting of the alliance’s heads of diplomacy that ends today in Brussels.

The Russian military offensive on Ukrainian territory, launched on February 24 last year, plunged Europe into what is considered the most serious security crisis since World War II (1939-1945).
