A daycare in southern Brazil was the scene of horror on Wednesday, when a 25-year-old man broke into it and hacked to death four children, in a country where attacks on schools have increased in recent years.
The drama occurred in the morning, in a private nursery where there were about forty children in Blumenau, a city of about 360,000 inhabitants in the state of Santa Catarina.
“The perpetrator of the attack jumped over the wall of the nursery armed with a small ax. (…) With it he hit the children, especially at head height,” the head of the police force explained at a press conference. firefighters Diogo de Souza Clarindo.
“There is no greater pain”
“It is with great sadness that I was informed that a murderer entered the Cantinho do Bom Pastor private day care center in Blumenau and attacked children and employees,” Governor Jorginho Mello said in a statement.
“There is no greater pain for a family than losing children, or grandchildren, especially in an act of violence against innocent and defenseless children. My condolences to the families for the monstrous events perpetrated at the Bom Pastor nursery,” said Brazilian President Luiz Inacio. Lula da Silva tweeted.
The Blumenau city council declared official mourning for 30 days and canceled classes in all municipal schools on Wednesday.
Attacks on schools have increased in Brazil in recent years. In November, a 16-year-old boy killed four people in two schools in Aracruz, in the southeastern state of Espírito Santo.
Last week, a 71-year-old teacher was stabbed to death by a student in Sao Paulo (southeast), the most populous city and economic capital of Brazil.
