The husband of former Scottish Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon, Peter Murrell, was released on the fourth fair at night without formal charges, after being detained for several hours due to an investigation into the finances of the Scottish National Party (SNP), reported police.
In a statement, the police also indicated that the agents carried out raids on “several homes within the scope of the investigation” and that a report will be prepared to be sent to the Public Ministry.
Sturgeon announced her resignation last February as prime minister and leader of the SNP and was succeeded last week by Humza Yousaf following an internal election.
The former independent leader, who retains her seat in the Holyrood Parliament (Edinburgh), “will fully cooperate with the Scottish Police if necessary, although no request has been made to date,” her voice-gate said on Wednesday.
Following the arrest, the party issued a statement saying it “would not be appropriate” to comment on any ongoing police investigation, but added that it “cooperates fully with this investigation and will continue to do so.”
Peter Murrell resigned as the party’s chief executive last month after taking responsibility for misreporting the membership of the SNP, which lost 30,000 in the space of a year.
The resignation, after more than 20 years in office, occurred during the internal party election triggered by Nicola Sturgeon, who invoked the “physical and mental impact” suffered for eight years at the head of the regional government.
The fact that the chief executive of the SNP was the husband of the leader was criticized during the campaign and generated rumors of irregularities and embezzlement.
