Father Casimiro Congo, one of the main figures in the fight for the independence of Cabinda, the Angolan enclave in the territory of the Democratic Republic of Congo, has died. He was 71 years old.
The information was provided by Angolan newspaperwhich adds that the priest died in the Provincial General Hospital of Cabinda, victim of an illness.
He was a teacher, ruler and bishop of the American Catholic Church in the province of Cabinda. He denounced Portuguese colonialism and also what he called “imposed slavery” by Luanda in Cabinda.
For several years he was one of the few voices to openly defend Cabinda’s independence, from which he never resigned, even after being appointed Cabinda’s Secretary of Education, Science and Technology.
