Russian prosecutors have demanded a 25-year prison sentence against journalist and opposition politician Vladimir Kara-Murza, charged with high treason for spreading allegedly false information about the Russian armed forces and leading an organization considered undesirable.
“The prosecutor has asked that Kara-Murza be sentenced to 25 years in a strict penal regime for the three crimes he is accused of,” the TASS news agency reported, citing the suspect’s lawyer, Maria Eismont, who defended that her client was innocent. and asked for his acquittal.
In early October, Russian authorities charged Kara-Murza with having collaborated “with a country of the Atlantic Alliance”, an offense punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
Kara-Murza was arrested in April 2022 for disobedience, but since then other accusations have piled up, such as spreading false information about the actions of the Russian armed forces.
The journalist has been an outspoken critic of the Kremlin for years and friends with Boris Nemtsov, who was murdered in Moscow. Kara-Murza survived two poisonings in 2015 and 2017.
The European Court of Human Rights has ruled against Russia for annulling Kara-Murza’s candidacy in regional elections. Russia withdrew from the Council of Europe after criticizing the invasion of Ukraine.
